The Mercedes-Benz 300D was a diesel powered variant of the W123 Sedan. Introduced for the 1977 model year, the 300 D was powered by Mercedes' OM617.912 inline five engine. This 3.0L diesel powerplant was originally rated at 80hp, but an update for the 1980 model year increased output to 88hp. Power was sent from the engine to the rear wheels.

When it launched in January 1976, the W123 was very much seen as a continuation of the successful W114/W115 line of mid-sized Mercedes sedans. Clean lines (some say timeless, some say anonymous, but none can deny that they say Mercedes) were credited variously to Friedrich Geiger and Bruno Sacco.
